Ok I admit it. The only way you can tell this is Neil Armstrong is the blue eyes. It was my final decision last night after a full day of prepping and then participating in a photoshoot. All I knew when I started was I wanted to make an astronaut. Why? I think I was influenced by all the google hype about the 50th Anniversary of man’s first walk on the moon plus the “you need to make dolls for boys too” crowd has always wanted to see an astronaut quiet doll.
I don’t remember much about the actual historical event. I was at school and they brought in a TV so we could watch. It was black and white and I don’t think I saw another TV in a school setting, until VHS came about the time I was finishing up in college. I was seven years old in Mrs. Arant’s second grade class. She was a very popular teacher and also an accomplished artist who sold paintings in Jackson Hole. I know I have the class picture in an album but it escapes my ability to find it at this time.
Which astronaut to honor? I was tempted to do Captain Tony Nelson from I dream of Jeanie, but that wouldn’t be obvious unless I added Barbara Eden as Jeannie. My current favorite series is Star Trek Enterprise with Scott Bakula as Captain Jonathan Archer. The theme song is very inspirational to me and my grandbaby loves it too, although some Trekkies hated it… who knew?! Anyways in the intro it shows an astronaut who turns out to be Alan Shepard. I sure didn’t recognize him from the opening credits clip.
So who should it have been? Neil Armstrong, Buzz Alrid, Alan Shepard? The nice thing about quiet dolls is you can make exactly who YOU want!
always, Vickie
