Week 37: Ron Howard

Ron Howard as Opie
Ron Howard as Opie from the Andy Griffith Show.

Ron Howard no longer looks like the darling son of Andy Taylor from the Andy Griffith Show or young Winthrop, with a lisp, in The Music Man. His second most famous role was Richie Cunningham from Happy Days, a sitcom set in the 1950’s.

Ron went on to become a very successful movie director. He prefers telling people what to do instead of being told. Unlike most child actors, he’s had a great life and been married to his childhood sweetheart,Cheryl Alley, since 1975. Even his kids seem to be turning out great. I remember hearing that he only had one bathroom in his Hollywood home on purpose to promote family togetherness. I found a great article about Bryce Dallas Howard, his daughter, wearing second-hand clothing to the premier of her film Rocketman.

Ron’s list of movies he’s directed is impressive. I remember thinking how cool when he directed Splash a mermaid movie starring Darryl Hannah. Many are on our favorites list; Willow, Far and Away, Curious George II and III ,and How the Grinch Stole Christmas, the version starring Jim Carrey. I found it very impressive that Howard stepped into directing Solo: A Star Wars Story after production has already started and did an excellent job completing the project.

Currently he co-chairs Imagine Entertainment with Brian Grazen. I look forward to seeing his documentary of Pavarotti and his up and coming movie Hillbilly Elegy.
